12 Miles South Coalition
Protecting the Mississippi Coast and Barrier Islands from Inappropriate
Oil and Gas Exploration and Drilling

January 2012 - The 12 Miles South Coalition is being reorganized to respond to the Mississippi Development Authority's current plan to proceed with surveying and leasing for drilling in Mississippi waters.

Dr. Olivia Graves took these photos in early April. Graves indicated the oil rigs were sited within the view shed surrounding Dauphin Island. She stated the constant noise from rig support vessels reflected across the water along with questionable water quality in the swim areas was disturbing. You can understand why Baldwin County, Alabama tourism officials pushed for and received a 15 mile buffer from drilling activity off the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach back in the mid 90's

The information you see here is a combination of current information and information from the previous attempt at drilling in 2005. We're updating the website as quickly as possible. The 2005 information is useful since the essential issues remain the same. The concerns about drilling as MDA plans remain the same. Furthermore, the decline in gas prices reduces the incentive for drilling in today's market.

Thank you for your interest, and hope the information contained in our website will be helpful.
